UK Issues Travel Warning Over Terrorism Threats in Bangladesh

The British High Commission issues travel advisory, urging citizens to exercise caution in light of potential attacks targeting foreigners and minority communities.

AB News Desk: The British High Commission in Dhaka has issued a stark warning regarding the heightened risk of terrorist attacks in Bangladesh. In a travel advisory released on Tuesday, the High Commission highlighted the potential for indiscriminate attacks in crowded areas, religious sites, and during political gatherings.

The updated travel guidance specifies that certain groups appear to be targeting individuals whom they perceive as living or expressing opinions contrary to Islamic beliefs. The High Commission noted that there have been previous attacks against minority religious communities and security personnel, often involving explosives in major cities.

The advisory warns travelers that Bangladeshi authorities are actively working to thwart these planned attacks, but cautions that increased police presence and movement restrictions may be implemented at short notice. “You should remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings, especially near police establishments,” the advisory states. “Avoid large gatherings and areas where significant police and law enforcement presence is expected.”

The political climate in Bangladesh remains volatile, as the High Commission pointed out that widespread violence was reported across the country in July and August of 2024, resulting in numerous casualties and injuries. The situation continues to be unstable, with ongoing political rallies that could quickly escalate into violence, potentially clashing with law enforcement.

In addition, the High Commission has noted incidents of violence, vandalism, and arson during protests and strikes throughout the country, which can turn deadly. The recent unrest has also impacted police operations, with significant damage reported at several police stations across Bangladesh; while many have resumed operations, not all officers have returned to duty.

Moreover, the High Commission has highlighted the criminal activities prevalent in Dhaka and other cities, alerting citizens to the risks of robbery, violent crime, and sexual assault. As the situation continues to develop, travelers are urged to remain cautious and informed.
