Transforming Prayagraj: The Miyawaki Technique Prepares the City for Mahakumbh 2025

PM Narendra Modi is passionate about technology and always on the lookout for innovative solutions from across the globe.

AB News, New Delhi: As the city of Prayagraj gears up for the Mahakumbh 2025, a significant initiative has been set in motion to foster a clean and healthy environment for the millions of visitors expected to attend. Over the past two years, the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation has harnessed the Japanese Miyawaki technique to cultivate dense forests at various locations across the city. These efforts are aimed at ensuring pure air and a sustainable atmosphere, benefiting both devotees and the local ecosystem.

Creating Oxygen Banks

Prayagraj Municipal Corporation Commissioner, Chandra Mohan Garg, revealed that the city has seen the creation of dense forests using the Miyawaki technique at more than ten locations, covering an impressive area of 55,800 square meters. The largest plantation effort, which involved planting 120,000 trees from 63 species, took place in the Naini industrial area. Additionally, the project has transformed Baswar, the city’s largest garbage dumping yard, by planting 27,000 trees from 27 different species. These initiatives not only manage industrial waste but also significantly improve air quality, reduce dust and odors, and advance environmental conservation.

Environmental Impact of Miyawaki Forests

The Miyawaki technique offers numerous environmental benefits that assist in combating urban pollution. According to Dr. N.B. Singh, a former Botany professor at Allahabad Central University, the rapid growth of these forests, achieved through the Miyawaki method, helps mitigate temperature fluctuations between day and night, particularly during the summer months. By lowering temperatures by 4 to 7 degrees Celsius, these forests enhance biodiversity, improve soil quality, and provide habitats for various animal and bird species.

A Diverse Ecosystem

The projects implemented in Prayagraj encompass a wide variety of species, including fruit-bearing trees, medicinal plants, and ornamental flora. Key species planted include mango, mahua, neem, peepal, tamarind, arjuna, teak, tulsi, amla, and ber. Ornamental plants like hibiscus, kadamba, and bougainvillea, alongside medicinal varieties such as brahmi and drumstick, have also been introduced. This rich diversity supports a balanced ecosystem and contributes to the overall sustainability of the urban environment.

Understanding the Miyawaki Technique

Developed by renowned Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki in the 1970s, the Miyawaki technique revolutionizes urban afforestation. Often termed the ‘pot plantation method,’ it involves planting trees and shrubs in close proximity to accelerate growth. This method can amplify plant growth up to tenfold, making it ideal for urban settings where space is limited. By imitating natural forests with a mix of native species, this approach not only enhances soil quality and biodiversity but also accelerates forest regeneration.

The successful use of the Miyawaki technique has positioned Prayagraj as an outstanding model for environmental restoration and urban sustainability. Jotirmoy Roy, environmentalist and chairman of the Vedic Heritage Preservation Trust, pointed out that this method effectively revitalizes urban landscapes and addresses pollution challenges. As the city prepares for Mahakumbh 2025, these thriving green forests will be essential in creating a healthy atmosphere for everyone, thereby paving the way for a more sustainable future. This innovative approach could also be applied to the Yamuna riverbed in Delhi to combat pollution and foster an eco-friendly environment. Our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has a passion for technology and constantly seeks out innovative solutions from around the globe. He strives to introduce and promote these advancements in India for the nation’s progress. One technique he particularly values is the Miyawaki method, which is being implemented under his guidance.
