Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Approves Ropeway Project to Enhance Pilgrimage Experience

AB Desk, New Delhi: The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) has announced the long-awaited implementation of a ropeway project, aimed at addressing the growing number of pilgrims and making the journey more accessible for elderly and differently-abled devotees. The project is set to revolutionize the pilgrimage experience, offering a safer, faster, and more inclusive option for millions of visitors each year.

SMVDSB CEO Anshul Garg, speaking to reporters in Katra, described the ropeway initiative as a “game changer,” particularly for elderly pilgrims and those unable to complete the steep 13-kilometer trek to the shrine. “The ropeway will also accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims visiting the holy cave annually,” Garg stated.

In 2023, the pilgrimage set a record with over 95 lakh devotees, highlighting the urgent need for improved facilities. Garg emphasized the project’s focus on providing a smoother yatra experience, especially for those with physical limitations or for whom helicopter services are insufficient.

The ropeway will connect Tarakote Marg to Bhawan, the main shrine area, drastically reducing the journey time from hours to mere minutes. This will alleviate congestion on traditional trekking routes while offering breathtaking views of the Trikuta hills, enhancing both the spiritual and scenic aspects of the pilgrimage.

Officials assured that environmental considerations will be prioritized during the project’s implementation. Garg also reaffirmed the board’s commitment to addressing local stakeholders’ concerns, ensuring their inclusion in the process.

“We are dedicated to making the yatra inclusive and accessible for everyone while preserving the local community’s aspirations,” Garg said. The groundwork for the project is expected to begin soon, with officials confident that the new ropeway will fulfill its promise of a seamless and inclusive pilgrimage experience.

The ropeway is projected to transport thousands of pilgrims daily, providing a transformative upgrade to the infrastructure while preserving the spiritual essence of the yatra.
