Jamia Millia Islamia: Students Detained Amid PhD Scholar Protest

Protest Turns Tense: Students Detained, University Cites Disruption

AB News, New Delhi: Ten students were detained by Delhi Police at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) on Thursday after protesting the university’s disciplinary actions against two PhD scholars. The incident has prompted increased security measures across the campus.

The students were demonstrating against JMI’s review of the scholars, who stand accused of organizing a protest last year commemorating the anniversary of the 2019 anti-CAA demonstrations. Protesters argue that the university’s actions are unjust, which led to the occupation of the academic block since Monday.

In a statement, JMI officials said the students were removed from campus with police assistance. The university claims the students disrupted academic activities, vandalized property, and obstructed access to essential facilities such as the Central Library and classrooms during the crucial mid-semester exam period. Further allegations include vandalism of the central canteen, a forced entry into the security advisor’s office, violation of university regulations, and possession of “objectionable contraband items.” The university claimed it offered to discuss the matter with the students but they refused.

Protesting students claim the university filed a complaint with police, which led to their families being contacted. One student, identified as Ritushree, alleged her parents were warned of potential action should she continue protesting.

The university issued a formal notice on Tuesday demanding the students vacate the protest site, citing disruption to academic activities. Despite the warnings and detentions, tensions remain high as students continue to challenge the administration’s actions.
