Ayush Visa: A Gateway for Foreign Nationals Seeking Traditional Healing in India

The introduction of the Ayush Visa opens doors for international patients seeking holistic treatments under India’s traditional medicine systems.

Arjoon R, AB News, New Delhi: In a significant step to promote India’s rich tradition of alternative medicine, the Government of India has rolled out a dedicated Ayush Visa for foreigners seeking treatment under the Ayush system of medicine. Announced on July 27, 2023, this initiative aims to enhance medical value travel (MVT) and position India as a global hub for wellness and therapeutic care. Union Minister of State (I/C) for Ayush, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, shared insights into this development during a recent session in the Rajya Sabha.

Understanding the Ayush Visa

The Ayush Visa caters specifically to individuals whose primary purpose is to avail themselves of treatment through the Ayush systems, which include Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy. This visa is available in four distinct sub-categories:

1. Ayush Visa (AY-1): For individuals seeking treatment.

2. Ayush Attendant Visa (AY-2): For attendants accompanying patients.

3. e-Ayush Visa:A digital application process for convenience.

4. e-Ayush Attendant Visa: For attendants, also accessible online.

To qualify, patients must seek services from accredited hospitals or wellness centers registered with relevant government authorities, ensuring high standards of care.

Progress in Issuance

As of December 4, 2024, a total of 123 regular Ayush Visas, 221 e-Ayush Visas, and 17 e-Ayush Attendant Visas have been issued, demonstrating a growing interest among foreign nationals in India’s holistic healing traditions.

Official Portal for Medical Value Travel

In accompanying efforts, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched the Advantage Healthcare India portal, a “one-stop” resource for international patients. The platform provides essential information regarding medical treatment options, wellness services, and the necessary steps for availing of Ayush treatments in India. Interested patients can visit the portal at [www.healinindia.gov.in](http://www.healinindia.gov.in) for guidance and assistance.

Strengthening Global Health Ties

The government is actively working to sensitize various stakeholders involved in Medical Value Travel. One key initiative, the Ayush Medical Value Travel Summit 2024, was held on September 30, 2024, in Mumbai, with a focus on ‘Global Synergy in Ayush: Transforming Health and Wellness through Medical Value Travel.’ This summit aims to integrate India’s traditional healthcare systems with modern practices, thereby enhancing the experience for international patients and establishing India’s leadership in the wellness tourism sector. The introduction of the Ayush Visa marks a crucial development in facilitating access to India’s diverse healing systems for foreign nationals. By merging ancient wisdom with modern healthcare, India aspires to offer comprehensive wellness solutions, fostering a mutually beneficial exchange that enriches both international patients and local practitioners. As the global demand for alternative healing continues to rise, the Ayush Visa is poised to play a pivotal role in the future of medical value travel in India.
