Vande Bharat train’s popularity soars as rail minister reports unprecedented demand from prominent leaders
Arjoon Roy, AB News Desk, New Delhi: The Indian Railways is facing an unprecedented demand for its semi-high-speed train, Vande Bharat. According to Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the ministry is receiving a large number of requests from prominent leaders to operate Vande Bharat trains in their areas. The demand is so high that even ministers are finding it challenging to fulfil.
In the past, leaders would typically request the Ministry of Railways to establish train stoppages in their regions. However, the trend has now shifted, with leaders emphasizing the need to operate specific trains, particularly the Vande Bharat Express. The train’s popularity can be attributed to its high occupancy rate, which is over 100 percent on various routes.
“We are receiving a significant number of requests from leaders to operate Vande Bharat trains in their areas,” said Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. “The demand is not just for one train, but for four to five trains. This is a significant shift from the past, where leaders would request train stoppages. Now, they want entire trains to be operated in their regions.”
To cater to the growing demand, the production of Vande Bharat trains is being rapidly increased. The budget has approved the construction of 350 Vande Bharat trains across four categories, including Vande Bharat sleeper and chair coaches, Amrit Bharat and Namoh Bharat. The manufacturing of these trains will commence soon.
“We are aiming to increase the production of Vande Bharat trains to meet the growing demand,” said Minister Vaishnaw. “In the next three years, we expect to have a fleet of around 500 Vande Bharat trains. This includes 100 Amrit Bharat trains, 50 Namoh Bharat trains, and 200 Vande Bharat trains (sleeper and chair coaches).”
Currently, around 70 Vande Bharat trains are operational, and the occupancy rate is over 100 percent on various routes. The introduction of a sleeper version of the train will further increase its popularity, making it an attractive option for passengers.
The high demand for Vande Bharat trains is a testament to the Indian Railways’ efforts to provide modern and efficient transportation services to its passengers. With the increased production of Vande Bharat trains, the railways aims to provide a comfortable and convenient travel experience to millions of passengers across the country.
