Prime Minister Modi Celebrates Chandigarh’s Implementation of Indian Justice Codes

Historic Milestone Marks the Replacement of Colonial Laws with Modern Legislation

AB News Desk, Chandigarh, July 3, 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed immense pride on Tuesday as Chandigarh became the first administrative unit in India to fully implement the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA). These landmark laws, which replace the British-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and Indian Evidence Act, were rolled out nationally on July 1, 2024.

Speaking at a special event in Chandigarh, PM Modi heralded these reforms as a historic step toward transforming India’s justice system. He emphasized the laws’ focus on expedient justice, equality, and a break from colonial attitudes. “These laws were created to punish Indians after the first struggle for Independence in 1857. Today, we have replaced them with laws that ensure justice for every citizen,” he stated.

The Prime Minister highlighted several key features of the new legislation, including specific timelines for delivering justice. Under the new regulations, verdicts in rape cases must be delivered within 50 days of the first hearing, while victims are entitled to updates regarding case progress within 90 days. Additionally, Modi touched upon the law’s sensitivity toward women and children, reassuring that provisions are in place to prevent convicts from being incarcerated longer than their sentences dictate.

During his speech, Modi witnessed a live demonstration conducted by Chandigarh Police on crime scene investigation in accordance with the new laws, showcasing advanced evidence collection techniques and procedural updates. This demonstration underscored the practical implementation of the reforms, which Modi described as a collaborative effort among legal experts, law enforcement, and the judiciary that has been underway since 2000.

“Chandigarh’s achievement symbolizes the power of justice and truth,” the Prime Minister remarked, linking the city’s significance to Chandi Devi, the goddess of power and justice. He commended the Supreme Court, high courts, and bar associations for their roles in shaping these modern laws, urging the nation to wholeheartedly embrace them to build a stronger legal framework.

Wrapping up his address, the Prime Minister stressed the broader implications of these laws for society and the economy. He stated, “With a firm grip on law and order, we can ensure safety, justice, and greater investments for the nation’s growth.”

The celebration of Chandigarh’s implementation stands as a pivotal moment in India’s legal landscape, aiming to enhance the country’s justice delivery system while fostering a more equitable environment for all citizens.
