India Likely to Extend Central Bank Chief’s Term: Sources

AB Desk, New Delhi (19.11.2024): The Indian government is likely to extend the term of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das, making him the longest-serving chief since the 1960s, according to three sources with direct knowledge of the matter.

Das, appointed in December 2018 amid strained government-regulator relations, has exceeded the typical five-year tenure. If extended, he will surpass Benegal Rama Rau’s record of 7.5 years (1949–1957).

Sources indicated the decision, expected after the Maharashtra state elections, will rest with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. No alternative candidates are under consideration.
